Things To Do Before Moving Day

There are many things involved with a move and it can get a bit stressful if you aren't careful. Moving companies, including moving companies in winnipeg will handle the transport, and packing of your things in some cases, but there are still things you'll need to do as well. Here are some tips to make your move easier.

Before your moving day, find out which companies supply needed utilities to your new place. With some services, you can arrange to transfer your existing accounts, but with others, it will be brand new. Set up your service with them to start on the day you'll be arriving in your new home. That way, when you get to your new place, you won't be spending your first night there in the dark. Once you're arranged for your new services, contact your old utility providers to let them know when you'll be ending your contracts with them.

File a change of address form with the postal service as well as with any companies that send you mail. Set up a PO box at the post office in your new city and have the postal service forward your mail to it if you won't be moving into your new home right away. This will allow you to avoid filing multiple "change of address" forms.

When you pack, set aside your necessities and take them with you instead of packing them in the truck with the rest of your things. This includes some spare clothes, toiletries, and some disposable dishware and silverware. Don't forget to include your medications. You should also pack any valuables, such as jewelry, cash, or bonds in with the items you'll be taking with you personally.

If you have pets, you'll need to arrange for their transport, as well. You can either arrange for them to be housed in a local kennel until the place is ready for them, or ask a friend or family member to pet sit while you move. If they are going with you in the car, they'll need proper transport. Don't forget that your pets will need to eat when you get there, too, so include some pet food in your suitcase with your other necessities.

All moving companies have rules about what they will and won't pack and transport for you. Contact your movers in advance to get a copy of their list of prohibited items so you can make other arrangements. Before the movers arrive, you'll also want to get rid of anything you don't want moved, including trash or items you can donate. This will help you and the movers avoid packing and moving things you just plan to get rid of anyway.
